Biographical or Historical Information

Warren Norwood was born August 21, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was drafted into the US Army in 1966 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War, during which he served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal for his service and much of his work takes inspiration from his time in Vietnam. After returning home in 1968 his daughter was born and he moved to Denton, Texas to attend the University of North Texas, then North Texas State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree. Following his graduation Warren Norwood worked as a writing teacher for several years. Over fifty of his students from this time went on to publish their own work professionally, including the novelists Viqui Litman, Lori Wilde, and Deborah Crombie. Norwood’s first novel, An Image of Voices, was nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer after being published in 1981. It was the start of his series The Windhover Tapes, which is made up of four of his thirteen published novels. Over the course of his writing career Norwood also wrote and published several short stories and poems, which were included in magazines, anthologies with other writers, and in his own smaller collections. In 1987 his second wife, Gigi Sherrell Norwood, introduced Warren to the mountain dulcimer, the first instrument he played consistently. Norwood went on to write several music and dulcimer tablature books and spread his knowledge to anyone he could. Norwood eventually settled in Weatherford, Texas where he passed away on June 3, 2005 from complications due to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. Norwood left a portion of this collection with the UNT Rare Books Room in the 1990s and in 2012 Rare Books merged with the UNT Archives to create UNT Special Collections. The remaining materials in this collection were received following his death. Source: “About Warren C. Norwood”.
