Biographical or Historical Information

Dr. Nino Testa is the Associate Director of Women & Gender Studies at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Testa is a former The Dallas Way board member. Duane Puryear contracted HIV at the age of 16 in 1981. He did not learn he was HIV-positive until 1987, when he was 22 years old. After his diagnosis Puryear volunteered with the AIDS Hotline of the Dallas AIDS Resource Center and sought out any opportunity to speak with young people about living with AIDS. In this way, he shaped countless lives for the better. Puryear’s friends remember him as a charismatic and positive person. His personal goal was to be the person who lived the longest with AIDS. He passed away in October 1991 having survived four serious bouts of AIDS complications.
