Biographical or Historical Information
From the invitation to the event on The Dallas Way website: "Join us in a discussion of the Dallas litigation that opened an early door to true equality to members of the GLBT community throughout the country: Baker v. Wade. Before there could ever be even a discussion of marriage equality, before there were fair employment ordinances, before the concept of non-discrimination for members of the GLBT community, there were a handful of courageous and resourceful Texans who demanded that the United States Constitution apply to them, as well . . . and a federal judge with the wisdom to embrace, well ahead of his time, the concept of justice and equality for all. Hear from four of witnesses, from four very different points of view, to the grand accomplishment that was Baker v. Wade."
Baker v. Wade challenged the section 21.06 of the Texas penal code which banned homosexual conduct of any kind. The plantiff in the case, backed by the Texas Human Rights Foundation, was Donald F. Baker, a former teacher who lost his job for coming out as a gay man during a television interview in 1977. Baker was a founder of the Dallas Gay Political Caucus along with Louise Young, Dick Peeples, Steve Wilkins and Jerry Ward and he was also president of the Dallas Gay Alliance.
