Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a series of amate paper cuttings or muñecos created by Alfonso García Téllez a noted traditional brujo or curanderos (literally “witch” or “curer”). There are 64 distinct figures, with multiple versions of most. The cuttings represent various spirit entities and are used in rituals of healing, protection, and such. Each figure is cut from amate paper, made in traditional methods from the inner bark of wild fig or mulberry trees. In addition to the figures, the collection includes an inventory of the figures, with notes in English and Spanish, as well as the appendix of a transcript of an interview Mr. Garcia Tellez gave the Sandstrom in May 1986.
