Scope and Contents

In this collection are Lory Masters' personal papers, photographs, and clothing as well as issues of magazines, newspaper clippings, and paper materials that she has collected over time. Each piece comes from a part of her life, covering the many organizations and efforts she was a part of and some of her personal life. The Flying W Motorcycle Club was established in 1975 by Lory Masters and her friends Debbie Chapa and Sherry Briggs. As a founding member Lory was part of several of their events and maintained several items from the club’s long history. This includes buttons, pins, trophies, and patches commemorating the group’s anniversaries and various events. There are also several jackets and vests from her time as a rider in the club as well as photographs of her Presidential inauguration ceremony in 1985 and plaques honoring her commitment and service to the group. Lory Masters also helped to establish the Extra Mile Awards in 1988, an event meant to honor women in the Dallas area who were pivotal members of their community. Over the years the event honored several women, and even a few men, who were prominent members of the Dallas community resulting in photographs, negatives, poster board collages, notes, and business records. Masters was also honored one year with an award plaque of her own. As part of her activism Masters took part in the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade in Dallas, Texas for several years. She filled various positions aiding in the organization and leadership of the parade and was even awarded the title of Grand Marshall of the 1988 parade. Several of her medallions and plaques commemorating her work with the parade, as well as photographs from her time as Grand Marshall, are included in the collection. Also included in the collection are materials from cowgirl history and the grand opening of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975. Masters has ties to the rodeo community through her family and remained connected to the people and events into her adult life, even receiving a signed copy of Sandra Day O’Connor’s memoir, which is part of this collection along with photographs of them and Sue Pirtle at the opening. From her personal life there are also books, photographs, medals, clothes, magazines, newspaper clippings, and mail from various organziations she has supported over the years. Specifically a banner, a t-shirt, and a mug commemorate Loryland, the area in Dallas that Masters sold homes in.
