Biographical or Historical Information

Judge Jerry Birdwell was the first openly gay man to serve as a judge in the state of Texas. He was appointed to the Dallas County 195th Judicial District Court by then-Texas governor, Ann Richards in 1992. He served a one-year term, often at the scrutiny of Dallas conservatives and was defeated in his re-election bid the following year by a candidate with wide support from Republican voters. After losing his reelection, Judge Birdwell moved to South Lake Tahoe, California, where he served on the city council from 2006 to 2009. During this period, he was elected as mayor for the 2008 term.

In 1989, Judge Birdwell hosted a fundraiser event in his home to support Meals on the Move (MOM), a Dallas-based meal delivery service that provided hot meals to people living with AIDS. The materials in this collection were donated by Judge Birdwell via The Dallas Way.
