Scope and Contents

This collection contains the correspondence and materials relating to Alfred Bailey Jolley's time as a County Agricultural Agent and Agriculture Director for KTLD Radio-TV and the Times Herald newspaper, as well as his personal photographs of Jolley, the Jolley Family, a Mexico trip, and others. His County Agent work photographs depict beef cattle, dairy, fairs, fruit, and terracing, as well as clippings of beef cattle, dairy, fairs, fruit, meat processing, meetings, pastures, and pecans. Several artificats are also included, such as plaques, badges, and ribbons.

Biographical or Historical Information

Alfred Bailey Jolley was born in Fort Worth, Texas on June 7, 1890.  He graduated from North Texas State Normal College in 1907, where he had played on the football team and was a member of the Kendall-Bruce Literary Society.  After graduation, he got a job teaching school, and by 1918 was a principal.  In 1919, he took a position as a Dallas County agricultural agent, and two years later he had progressed to being the head agricultural agent for the county.  In 1953, after 34 years as an agricultural agent, he retired from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, and took on a job at KRLD-TV and radio station in Dallas as Agricultural Director.  In this position he hosted a radio show at 6:15am each morning. In addition, he wrote agriculture columns for the Dallas Times Herald three times a week.  In 1967, at the age of 77, he retired from his third career.   During his life, he earned a number of awards, including the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award from the DeSoto Future Farmers of America, and the Honorary State Farmer Award.   Jolley passed away on November 28, 1979 in Denton, Texas.
