Scope and Contents

This collection documents both the academic and poetry career of Cecil Eugene (“Gene”) Shuford, including his time at the University of Arkansas and North Texas State University (NTSU), from 1924 to 1995. The collection includes literary manuscripts and drafts, notebooks, guides, correspondence, programs, newspaper clippings, certificates, publications, photographs, obituaries, and his thesis typescript. The collection includes documents about the Ariel Club, The Poetry Society of Texas and The Poetry Society of America. It contains War World II correspondence between Shuford and his family. It also includes photographs of Shuford, his family, NTSU students and buildings, as well as members of the Poetry Society of Texas. The collection also contains correspondence from editors of publications, book reviews, drafts of poetry written by Shuford, as well as clippings that highlight Shuford, North Texas Exes, like Bob St. John, and the NTSU Journalism Department's accomplishments.

Abstract

A collection of manuscripts, publications, papers, letters and other materials written by or about Cecil Eugene (“Gene”) Shuford. Known most often by his pen name, Gene, Shuford was a noted poet as well as a professor and director in the School of Journalism at North Texas State University (NTSU) and a 1st lieutenant of the U.S. Army Air Force during War World II. The collection materials range in date from 1924 to 1995.
