Scope and Contents

The Gordon Knox Film Collection contains over 100 films created by Texas-born filmmaker Gordon Knox (1906 – 1992) or Mr. Knox’s production company, The Princeton Film Archives. The collection contains short and feature-length documentaries produced between 1937 and 1964 for the United States Armed Forces, state and federal government agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector clients. Currently, 67 films in the Gordon Knox Collection are available through the UNT Digital Library along with related still photographs showing film crews and staff working on location. The remaining 35mm films are housed at the UNT Media Library, along with physical copies of the 67 16mm films that are can be viewed through the UNT Digital Library, and a 35mm still camera with its accessories.

Conditions Governing Access

Physical copies of 16mm films may be viewed upon request in the UNT Media Library. DVD copies of many of the films are available for a small duplication fee by contacting the UNT Media Library.

Conditions Governing Use

The physical items and copyright held by the Knox estate on the collection were transferred to the University of North Texas in the gift agreement dated December 30, 2012.  UNT will make a reasonable attempt to contact the Knox estate about the creation of copies (commercial and non-commercial) and usage of the films until December 31, 2025.

Method of Acquisition

The collection was first sent to UNT under a temporary custody agreement that lasted from November 9, 2007 to July 30, 2010. A permanent gift agreement was signed on December 30, 2010. The collection was shipped from the Knox home in Santa Fe, NM to the UNT Media Library.

Digital copies of many of the films are available for public online viewing through the UNT Digital Library, Gordon Knox Film Collection. Digital images of the scrapbook are available for restricted online viewing through the UNT Digital Library, Gordon Knox Film Collection, while on UNT premises.

Separated Materials

The Gordon and Nancy C. Knox estate lent UNT 212 photographs and one scrapbook for the purposes of digitizing and adding the the UNT Digital Library. The physical photographs and scrapbook were returned to the Knox Estate in 2011.
