Biographical or Historical Information

Nellie L. Griffiths was born in Missouri on September 16, 1983. In 1927, she was hired by North Texas State Teachers College to teach Elementary Education. She would go on to be Professor of Education, Supervisor in Laboratory School, Supervisor of Student Teachers, and after her retirement in 1962, she was recognized with the status of Emeritus Faculty. While teaching, she helped to develop an advance course in the psychology and teaching of reading with an emphasis on the psychology of the reading process. She also established the Reading Laboratory. Throughout her career she was a prolific author of articles and booklets, and contributed to many publications. She also gave many speeches and presentations on elementary education. She was also one of the creators of the Metropolitan Readiness Test. Professor Griffiths passed away December 23, 1977.
