Scope and Contents

This is an artificial collection created by UNT Special Collections. The materials included in this collection will aid researchers looking to dissect the intricate planning processes and sheer amount of inter-departmental cooperation and effort required to celebrate the University of North Texas's (UNT) 100th anniversary. This collection includes plans and meetings leading up to the centennial; advertisements, publications, event information, and photographs created in the midst of the celebrations; and reports, correspondence, and certificates written after the centennial had passed. Researchers will discover meeting minutes and project plans covering the minutest details, to large-scale committee reports spanning the entirety of the celebrations. Furthermore, within this collection is an entire series dedicated to the systematic editing process of UNT’s book, Down the Corridor of Years. Multiple versions of the publication, book notes, and even order invoices allow scholars to conceptualize the process of creating a comprehensive history of a university. Finally, certificates of recognition and congratulation as well as proclamations and resolutions included in the oversized materials provide a glimpse into the respect and support UNT garnered for reaching such a historic milestone.

Biographical or Historical Information

“It will be our aim to become leaders in the education of the young men and women of Texas, fitting them to creditably fill the most important positions in business and professional circles. We desire the cooperation of all who believe in higher education and who want to see our state in the very front of intellectual as well as material progress.” – Joshua C. Chilton In 1988, the University experienced one last name change, its seventh, to The University of North Texas (UNT). On September 16, 1990, UNT celebrated its official 100th birthday. Among the accomplishments at this time was the building of the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building and the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Now in the 2000s, enrollment is at an all-time high, UNT is ranked as a Tier One research university, and can boast a unique and diverse community of students and teachers. From humble beginnings, an impressive university emerged.
