Scope and Contents

The oral history program interviews individuals concerning their memories of historic events they witnessed or participated in.  The interviews are transcribed, edited and bound. The Oral History Program collection includes Cassette Tapes, Reel to Reel Tapes, Compact Discs, and Mini Discs, as well as documents and artifacts. The materials largely cover a range of years from 1962 – 2013. The collection includes interviews from the Legislative Project, the New Deal Project, the Pearl Harbor Project, the Prisoners of War Project, the Texas Republican Women’s Project, and the Texas Textile Mill Project. The collection also includes many interviews about topics such as the Civilian Conservation Corps., desegregation of North Texas State College, interviews with local business owners, immigration, and the Texas Pop Festival. There are also many interviews with noteworthy individuals including: Mary Kay Ash, Norman Brinker, Frank Cuellar, Sr., Frank Cuellar, Jr., Bette C. Graham, Cecil H. Green, Herman W. Lay, M. Lamar Muse, C.B. Owens, Jerry Owens, Richard Rogers, Paul Voertman, David Allred, Kay Bailey, Earle Cabell, Bill Clayton, Price Daniel, Martin Dies, DeWitt Hale, O.H. “Ike” Harris, Abner Haynes, Eddie Bernice Johnson,  Norman Mailer, Allen Shivers, Preston Smith, Coke Stevenson, Ben Wooten, and Charles Wilson. Along with correspondence from Edwin A. Walker, Barbara Jordan, and Ladybird Johnson.

Abstract

This collection contains the recorded interviews of individuals who witnessed or participated in historic events.  The edited transcriptions of these interviews are made available to researchers, students, and the general public.  The interviews are conducted by faculty and students of UNT.

Arrangement Note

The interviews are arranged by the format and then alphabetically. Two boxes are in the Library Annex and the rest are held in the RCL.

Physical Access Requirements

This collection is stored off-site and requires a minimum of 24 hour notice prior to use.
